East Washington Historic District
East Washington Historic District, Victorian residential district in East Washington, Pennsylvania.
The East Washington Historic District is a residential area filled with houses built in the late 1800s, spreading across several streets and avenues. The homes display features of Colonial Revival, Queen Anne, and Shingle Style architecture from that building period.
The area was recognized as a historic district in 1984 when about 120 Victorian houses were identified and protected. This designation added the neighborhood to the National Register of Historic Places.
The houses display different building styles from the late 1800s, with many featuring detailed porches and decorative fronts that reflect how people lived and built during that era. Walking through the streets, you notice the careful craftsmanship in the stonework and woodwork that homeowners valued at the time.
The district is best explored on foot, allowing you to take in the architecture of each house at your own pace. Moving slowly through the streets lets you observe the different design elements and details that vary from building to building.
A 140-year-old farmhouse was moved to a new location in 1977 after the local college acquired the property. This relocation shows how historic structures can be protected even as land use changes.
