Abernathy Field Station

Abernathy Field Station, Protected research area in Washington County, Pennsylvania

Abernathy Field Station is a research facility in Washington County covering about 57 acres of different ecosystems including deciduous forests, wetlands, and streams. The site also contains experimental study zones where scientists and students conduct field observations and monitoring work.

The station was founded through a land donation from Dr. Ernest and Janet Abernathy, establishing it as a research center. Over time, it has grown into a key outdoor laboratory for environmental monitoring in the region.

Students from Washington & Jefferson College conduct supervised research here, making the station a hands-on learning space for environmental science. The facility plays a central role in how the college connects classroom knowledge with real-world ecological study.

Access is limited since the site is primarily reserved for research and student projects run by the college. Anyone interested in visiting should contact Washington & Jefferson College in advance for information about access.

The station is home to more than 100 tree species, making it a rich forest setting for study. Two perennial streams flow through the grounds, creating habitats where salamanders and other small creatures live.
