Eastern High School, University building in Baltimore, US
Eastern High School is a three-story Italian Villa style building on East 33rd Street with distinctive corner towers and ornate cornice details. The structure was extensively renovated in the 1990s and now serves as office space for Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions staff.
Founded in 1844, it was Baltimore's first public high school for girls and operated under that mission for over a century. The institution closed in 1986 when Johns Hopkins acquired the property for its medical staff operations.
The building served as an important educational space for women in Baltimore for many generations. Its presence in the neighborhood continues to reflect the city's commitment to female education.
The building is now private office space for Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, so public access is limited to viewing it from the street. You can still appreciate its architectural details and distinctive towers from the outside.
During World War II, students raised over 200,000 dollars through bond and stamp sales to support the war effort. This remarkable achievement reflects the commitment of young women at the school to contribute nationally.
