Sherwood Gardens, Public garden in Guilford, Baltimore, US.
Sherwood Gardens is a 6-acre public garden in Guilford, northern Baltimore, known for its spring-flowering displays arranged across maintained green spaces. The site features 80,000 tulips alongside magnolias, flowering cherries, wisteria, and dogwoods in a carefully landscaped setting.
The land was originally part of the Guilford estate owned by Baltimore Sun founder A.S. Abell before John Sherwood developed the gardens in the 1920s. A pond that once occupied this site was filled in during 1912 when the Olmsted Brothers were designing the surrounding residential community.
The garden holds special meaning for the neighborhood during spring, when the Tulip Dig event draws families and gardeners who want to select and harvest bulbs themselves. This hands-on tradition has become a cherished ritual in the local community's seasonal calendar.
The gardens are open year-round and welcome visitors at no cost to enter. Parking is available along the surrounding streets including East Highfield Road, Underwood Road, and Stratford Road.
The garden sits atop what was once a pond, filled in during 1912 to make room for the newly planned neighborhood layout. This former water body influences the moisture conditions and plant growth patterns that visitors observe today.
