Evergreen Museum & Library, House museum in Baltimore, United States
Evergreen Museum occupies a Neoclassical mansion surrounded by 26 acres of gardens and woodlands in Baltimore. The complex houses fine art collections, rare books, and functions as an arts center, entertainment venue, and research library.
The mansion was constructed in 1858 following designs by architect John Rudolph Niernsee. The Garrett family purchased the property in 1878 and extensively modified it to accommodate their expanding art and book collections.
The collections reflect the passion of the Garrett family for decorative arts, fine paintings, and rare manuscripts gathered over decades. Walking through the rooms, visitors encounter personal choices in taste and style that reveal how this family lived and what they valued.
Guided tours help visitors understand the architecture and collections throughout the house. The grounds with gardens and woodlands are pleasant to walk through and allow time to explore the full extent of the property.
The property simultaneously functions as an arts center, event venue, and research library alongside its role as a historic house museum. This combination of artistic programming and scholarly work sets it apart from typical house museums.
