Evergreen Museum & Library, House museum in Baltimore, United States
The Evergreen Museum & Library is a Neoclassical mansion in Baltimore that now serves as a house museum, arts center, and research library. The building sits within gardens and wooded land, and its rooms hold fine art collections alongside rare books and manuscripts.
The mansion was built in 1858 to designs by architect John Rudolph Niernsee. The Garrett family bought it in 1878 and made substantial changes over the following decades to house their growing collections of art and books.
The rooms are filled with paintings, decorative objects, and rare manuscripts chosen by the Garrett family over generations. Walking through the house feels less like visiting a museum and more like stepping into a private home where the owners' tastes are visible in every corner.
Guided tours are available and help visitors understand both the architecture and the collections inside the house. Setting aside extra time to walk the gardens and wooded areas around the building is worth it, as the grounds are part of the overall visit.
The property includes a small theater built around 1923 specifically for private performances, which still hosts events today. It is one of the few surviving private home theaters from that era still used for its original purpose.
