Humanities Center

Humanities Center, Tudor Revival academic building in Baltimore, US

Description

The Humanities Center is a building in Baltimore featuring steeply pitched rooflines, decorative half-timbering, and multiple gables in the Tudor Revival style. It houses offices, seminar rooms, and lecture halls equipped with modern educational facilities while maintaining its original historical architectural character.

History

Architect James Renwick Jr. completed the building in 1896 as a residence for Horatio Garrett, who died before the house was finished. It was later incorporated into Loyola University Maryland and has shaped the academic landscape there ever since.

Culture

The building started as a private residence and served as a Red Cross facility for wounded soldiers during World War I. Today it functions as an academic center within Loyola University Maryland where students and faculty work and study.

Practical

The building sits on the Loyola University Maryland campus and is easily accessible from main pathways. Visitors should arrive during daytime hours and remember that it functions as an active academic space where classes and research happen.

Did you know?

The building was featured in the Netflix series House of Cards and underwent a major expansion of about 30,000 square feet in 1992. This addition seamlessly blends the original Tudor Revival style with modern academic spaces for the growing university.
