Edna G, Historic tugboat at Two Harbors waterfront, United States.
The Edna G is a steam-powered steel tugboat permanently moored at the waterfront of Two Harbors, Minnesota. Built in the late 19th century, it is one of the few remaining steam tugboats of its kind on the Great Lakes.
The tugboat was launched in 1896 and spent most of its working life guiding ore freighters in and out of Two Harbors. It served the US Navy on the East Coast during World War I before returning to the lakes, where it worked until 1981.
The Edna G is named after Edna Gale Stone, the daughter of a manager at the railroad company that ran the port. On board, the tight sleeping berths and small galley show how basic daily life was for the crew working these vessels.
The boat is moored at the Two Harbors waterfront and easy to spot from the dock, but it is worth checking opening hours in advance as access varies by season. Wear sturdy, non-slip shoes since the decks and interior stairways are narrow and can be slippery.
Although the Edna G retired from service in 1981, its original steam engine is still in working condition and can occasionally be demonstrated to visitors. Finding a ship engine of that age in a condition where it can still be operated is now very rare.
