The institution was founded in 1855 by members of the Christian Church and became the first higher education establishment in Illinois to admit men and women on equal terms. During the Civil War, 29 students and faculty volunteered for Company G of the 17th Infantry.
The annual Ivy Ceremony takes place during graduation events and hands small ivy sprigs to new students as a mark of their entry into campus life. This tradition connects generations and turns the plant into a living symbol of the institution.
Students choose from 33 major programs, 20 minors, and 11 pre-professional tracks while small class sizes allow direct contact with teachers. The campus sits within a small community, ensuring short walks between buildings and dormitories.
The Recruiting Elm tree marks the spot where members of the institution volunteered for service during the Civil War. Today, this location recalls a moment when academic life and military commitment met on the grounds.
