Fabyan Windmill, Historic windmill in Geneva Township, United States.
Fabyan Windmill is a five-story wooden mill building in Geneva Township reaching about 68 feet tall with sails spanning about 74 feet across. The structure uses traditional Dutch construction methods without metal nails, and inside are cypress wood beams with black walnut trim throughout.
German craftsmen built this structure between 1850 and 1860 in Lombard, Illinois. George Fabyan purchased it in 1914 and later moved it to its present location.
The structure shows milling methods from the 1800s through its complete grinding system, which volunteer millers still operate today. These craftspeople keep traditional practices alive in ways visitors can observe.
The site is located in Fabyan Forest Preserve and is easiest to visit during good weather, since operations depend on seasonal conditions. Visitors should check current hours before traveling, as these vary by season.
A large cogged wheel inside rotates when wind hits the canvas-covered vanes, setting the entire grinding system in motion. This mechanical interaction is visible to visitors and shows how wind powered the mill's work.
