Equitable Building, Gothic Revival office building in Des Moines, United States.
The Equitable Building is a 19-story office tower in downtown Des Moines designed in Gothic Revival style. Pointed arches and decorative stonework define the exterior, while the lower floors contain retail space and upper levels house apartments.
The structure was completed in 1924 and remained Iowa's tallest building for nearly 50 years before another skyscraper surpassed it. Its construction marked the peak of the economic boom driven by insurance companies settling in the city.
The building takes its name from the Equitable Life Insurance Company, which originally established its headquarters here as the city's economy expanded. Today, residents and visitors experience a structure that reflects the ambitions of Des Moines during its period of rapid growth.
The building sits on Locust Street in the downtown area and is easily accessible on foot. Visitors can admire the facade from street level and explore the surrounding neighborhood to see other landmarks.
In 2012 the former office building underwent conversion into apartments, shifting its purpose after almost a century. This transformation shows how older towers can gain new life through renovation and become part of the city's current residential landscape.
