First Colony Inn, Hotel in den Vereinigten Staaten
The First Colony Inn is a historic hotel in Shingle style located in Nags Head, North Carolina, built in 1932 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The building features wraparound verandas, wood shingle exterior, an H-shaped layout with three equal sections, and open breezeways connecting the wings.
Opened in 1932 as LeRoy's Seaside Inn, the hotel underwent several name changes over its decades of operation. In the late 1980s, coastal erosion threatened the building, but local families undertook a careful relocation effort, moving it piece by piece to preserve this rare surviving early 20th-century seaside structure.
The inn's rooms carry the names of early English settlers who arrived at Roanoke Island in the late 1500s, honoring their pioneering journey. This naming choice connects visitors to the area's earliest colonial history while they stay.
The inn sits directly on South Virginia Dare Trail with easy walking access to the beach and ocean just steps away. Rooms are non-smoking and pets are not permitted; advance notice is helpful for late evening arrivals.
In a remarkable engineering feat during the 1980s, the entire building was relocated piece by piece to escape coastal erosion, making it the only surviving early 1930s seaside hotel still standing at Nags Head. This extraordinary rescue effort preserved one of the rarest structures from that era for future visitors to experience.
