Fifth Regiment Armory, Historic armory in Baltimore, United States
The Fifth Regiment Armory is a historic military building in Baltimore, Maryland, with stone walls, buttresses, parapets, and a crenellated roofline that give it the appearance of a medieval fortress. Inside, a large drill hall with a mezzanine level forms the core of the structure.
Construction started in 1901 and was completed in 1917, during a period when Baltimore was growing as an urban center. Over the following decades, the building served as a venue for national gatherings, including the 1912 Democratic National Convention.
Inside, the Maryland Museum of Military History displays uniforms, weapons, and documents tied to the state's role in past conflicts. The collection spans several centuries and gives a concrete sense of how Maryland soldiers were equipped and organized over time.
The building sits on 29th Division Street in Baltimore and is accessible from several parts of the city. Since the interior has multiple levels including an underground area and a mezzanine, visitors should be prepared for stairs.
In 1958, President Eisenhower delivered a televised speech from inside the armory, making it one of the early examples of a military venue used for broadcast communication. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985 and is also part of the Baltimore National Heritage Area.
