This building stands on Avenida Urdaneta in Caracas and houses the offices responsible for monetary policy and oversight of the financial system. The exterior facade shows a sober architecture with large windows and a tall entrance area.
The foundation took place in 1939 to unify currency issuance and centralize functions previously exercised by private banks. In the following decades, the institution played a central role in managing oil revenue and administering foreign exchange reserves.
The institution houses a museum displaying coins and banknotes from different periods of Venezuelan economic life. Visitors can examine historical payment methods that shaped everyday transactions for earlier generations.
The building sits centrally in the El Candelaria neighborhood, easily reached by metro or bus. The area around the main building is busy during the day, but it is advisable not to walk alone in the evening.
A portion of the gold holdings was repatriated from foreign vaults to Caracas in the early 2010s. This return took place in several transports and was followed by international media.
