Noi Bai International Airport, International airport in Soc Son District, Vietnam
Noi Bai International Airport is the main gateway for air travel in northern Vietnam, located in Soc Son District near Hanoi. The complex includes separate terminal buildings, parking areas, and service zones arranged around a central airfield with multiple taxiways.
The site began serving aircraft in 1965 during a period of conflict and initially functioned mainly for military purposes. Civilian use grew after peace came, leading to the construction of a new international terminal that opened in 2014.
Terminal 2 displays motifs inspired by bamboo and local craft traditions throughout its interior spaces. The waiting areas combine natural wood finishes with references to northern Vietnamese design, creating a sense of regional identity.
Reaching central Hanoi takes between 30 minutes and an hour depending on traffic, with the route following National Road 3 across Nhat Tan Bridge. Free shuttle buses operate between terminals starting at 6 AM and continuing until midnight for passengers transferring between buildings.
The two parallel runways measure 3,200 and 3,800 meters (roughly 10,500 and 12,500 feet), allowing simultaneous takeoffs and landings without waiting. This setup makes it one of the few facilities in Southeast Asia with such capacity for independent operations.
