The institution comprises several exhibition halls containing photographs, military equipment, and personal belongings, along with an outdoor area displaying tanks, aircraft, and heavy artillery. Collections document various aspects of the Vietnam War through documents and artifacts.
After the Vietnam War ended in 1975, the facility opened initially as an exhibition house documenting wartime actions. In 1995, the museum received its current name and expanded its collections to include additional exhibits from different phases of the conflict.
The museum serves as a memorial space for war victims and uses personal belongings, survivor interviews, and documentary films to illustrate the long-term impact on Vietnamese society. It plays an important role in national remembrance and peace education.
The facility receives visitors daily from 7:30 AM to noon and 1:30 PM to 5:00 PM. Outdoor sections display military vehicles, while interior galleries contain various war artifacts. Audio guides are available in multiple languages and the building features air conditioning.
The collection includes a French guillotine apparatus used during the colonial period to execute political prisoners. Visitors can also view a replica of the famous tiger cages, prison cells used on Con Dao Island.
