The district extends across 47.3 square kilometers, encompassing 71 islands with Co To Lon, Thanh Lan, and Tran being the principal territories.
The area transformed from a temporary fishermen shelter to a permanent settlement during the Nguyen Dynasty when Chinese immigrants established communities on the islands.
