Xuan Thuy National Park, Wetland national park in Nam Dinh Province, Vietnam
Xuan Thuy National Park is a wetland reserve at the mouth of the Red River in Nam Định Province. The park covers mangrove forests, shallow water zones, and mudflats that shift with the seasons.
The site received Ramsar protection in 1989 as the first wetland area in Southeast Asia to gain this designation. This recognition marked a turning point in acknowledging the region's importance for bird conservation.
Local communities in the surrounding area practice both rice farming and fish breeding in the shallow waters. You can see how these two activities exist side by side in the landscape today.
Visitors reach the site best by organized boat tours departing from the shore. The best time to visit is between October and April, when migratory birds arrive from the north.
The area is home to more than 250 bird species and holds the largest population of black-faced spoonbills in Vietnam. These rare migratory birds make every visit here a chance to see species that are hard to find elsewhere.
