Besseggen, Mountain hiking path in Jotunheimen National Park, Norway
Besseggen is a mountain ridge in Jotunheimen that runs between two lakes at around 1,743 meters elevation. The route follows narrow crests with steep drops on both sides and offers open views across the surrounding mountain landscape throughout.
The ridge was long a traditional mountain crossing for local walkers and herders in the region. Its popularity as a hiking destination grew from the 1970s onward when boat services made the crossing more accessible to visitors.
The Norwegian Trekking Association maintains this route as part of their network of hiking trails, supporting Norway's outdoor recreation traditions.
The route is best accessed during summer months from June through October when boat connections between the lakes operate. Good footwear and no fear of heights are needed, as the path includes narrow sections with steep drops alongside.
What stands out on this route is the striking color contrast between the two lakes: one appears greenish due to glacial sediment, while the other displays deep blue tones. From above, these differing colors create an unusual landscape view that draws visitors to take photographs.
