Gjendesheim, Tourist cabin at Gjende lake entrance, Norway
Gjendesheim is a mountain lodge situated at the eastern shore of Gjende lake at about 1000 meters elevation. The cabin houses multiple room types including single, double, and four-bed rooms as well as dormitory spaces for visitors.
The Norwegian Trekking Association founded this lodge in 1868 as one of the early mountain hospitality places to support hiking development. A permanent manager was appointed in 1871 to handle the growing number of visitors.
The cabin works closely with nearby farmers and food makers to source its meals. This connection to the surrounding land shapes how visitors experience eating and staying in the mountains.
The lodge sits at the trailhead for several mountain routes, so visitors should wear proper hiking boots and plan time for exploration. Booking accommodation and meals ahead is essential, especially during peak seasons.
The lodge marks the beginning of the Besseggen Ridge hike, a famous mountain trail with narrow passages and exposed sections. Many hikers come specifically to experience this route and its dramatic views between two lakes.
