Norwegian Computing Center, Research foundation in Blindern, Norway
The Norwegian Computing Center is a research foundation in Blindern that conducts contract research in statistics, machine learning, and information technology. It employs around 100 researchers with doctoral degrees who work on projects for organizations throughout Norway and internationally.
The foundation was established in 1952 and gained recognition for developing the Simula programming language between 1962 and 1967. This early innovation contributed significantly to advances in computer science and object-oriented programming methods.
The center partners with Oslo Science City and supports research efforts spanning marine ecology, healthcare innovations, and computational methods across multiple disciplines.
The center is located on the fourth floor of Kristin Nygaards building at the University of Oslo within the Blindern campus environment. Visitors should look for regularly offered public research presentations or seminars held at the building.
The institution developed methods for fish stock assessment and created technology for automated anonymization of text documents using machine learning. These two focus areas demonstrate the practical range of work beyond academic theory.
