Rupandehi District

Rupandehi is an administrative district in Lumbini Province that spans about 1,360 square kilometers (525 square miles) across the fertile Terai plains. The landscape ranges from low-lying flatland to gently rolling areas, creating diverse environments for agriculture and settlement.

The district is most significant as the birthplace of Prince Siddhartha Gautama, who later became Buddha around 563 BCE in the Lumbini area. This birth became a turning point in religious history and drew people from across the world to seek spiritual understanding.

The region is home to multiple communities including Tharu, Brahmin, Chhetri, Magar, Yadav, and Madhesi peoples who speak Nepali, Awadhi, and Bhojpuri in their daily lives. This diversity shapes local traditions, festivals, and the way people interact across different neighborhoods.

The Gautam Buddha International Airport near Bhairahawa provides regular flight connections to both domestic and international destinations. This makes it convenient to arrive and travel throughout the district to see its different areas.

Three major rivers—Tinau, Dano, and Rohini—flow through the district and feed an extensive irrigation system that sustains local farming. These waterways are essential to the region's agricultural success and shape its green landscape.
