Pasonanca Natural Park, Natural park in Zamboanga City, Philippines
Pasonanca Natural Park is a protected nature reserve on the Zamboanga Peninsula that spans 17,414 hectares and contains old growth forests, steep slopes, and the Tumaga River watershed system. The grounds also feature three swimming pools, including an Olympic-size pool, a natural flowing pool, and a children's pool equipped with slides.
The protected area was established in 1912 when General John Pershing initiated its construction and Thomas Hanley designed the original layout. These early developments established the foundation for the park's role today as both a recreation and conservation area.
La Jardin de Maria Clara Lobregat displays native plant species, including rare orchids and regional bird species that inhabit this curated garden space. Visitors can observe the local flora in a setting designed to show the natural diversity of the region.
The park is easily accessible and offers visitors a mix of nature activities and recreation at the swimming pools. The best conditions for visiting occur during drier months when the trails and pathways are most easily navigable.
The park shelters the critically endangered Philippine Eagle and serves as the primary water source for around 800,000 residents of Zamboanga City. This dual role as habitat for one of the rarest bird species and critical infrastructure makes the park especially important to the region.
