Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral

Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral is a Catholic church in Dipolog featuring solid adobe stone walls built to last through the tropical climate. Inside, wooden carved reliefs of the Four Evangelists line the interior as decorative religious artwork.

Construction of this cathedral began in 1893, with the parish officially established in 1896 under Father Esteban Yepes as its first priest. The building rose during a period when the Catholic Church was strengthening its presence throughout the region.

The altar in this cathedral was designed by José Rizal, a Philippine nationalist and writer, while he lived in exile in nearby Dapitan during the late 1800s. His artistic contribution reflects the intellectual influence of a key historical figure on the spiritual space.

The cathedral sits in the heart of Dipolog and is easily reached on foot, especially when walking through the town center. Regular services happen throughout the week and on weekends, allowing visitors to experience the space at different times of day.

In 2021, this cathedral was recognized as one of 500 Jubilee Churches celebrating five centuries of Christianity in the Philippines. This designation acknowledged the role played by this place in the longer religious story of the island nation.
