Ayala Bridge, Steel truss bridge in Manila, Philippines
Ayala Bridge is a steel truss structure crossing the Pasig River to link Ermita and San Miguel districts in Manila. The crossing passes over the western end of Isla de Convalecencia while carrying major traffic routes through the city.
The original bridge was built in 1872 by Don Jacobo Zóbel y Zangroniz, establishing the first crossing at this location. The structure was rebuilt entirely in steel in 1908, marking the introduction of steel bridge technology in the Philippines.
The bridge serves as a key passage for religious processions, especially during the annual Feast of the Black Nazarene when devotees cross it as part of the celebration. This role connects the structure to the spiritual practices of local residents and the city's religious calendar.
The bridge is accessible on foot and by vehicle, offering a direct route through central Manila. Be aware that it may close temporarily during religious processions and celebrations throughout the year.
A renovation in 2015 raised the entire bridge structure to make it more resistant to earthquakes. This adjustment helps the bridge handle the natural movements and seismic activity common to the region.
