Mercado Mansion, Heritage mansion in Carcar, Philippines.
Mercado Mansion is a two-story ancestral house built in the Bahay na Bato style in Carcar, on the island of Cebu, with a stone ground floor and a wooden upper level. It stands in the older part of the town center, surrounded by other buildings from the same period.
The house was built in the 1880s and then expanded in 1906 under Don Mariano Mercado, who went on to serve as mayor of Carcar. Those later additions reflect the changes that came with the start of the American colonial period in the Philippines.
The building's blue facade and hand-carved wooden details on the windows and entrance give a sense of the craftsmanship that local builders brought to wealthy homes in this part of Cebu. Visitors walking past can observe these decorative elements from the street without entering.
The house is in downtown Carcar and easy to reach on foot when exploring the town's older streets. Because it is still a private residence, it is worth contacting the occupants in advance before planning an interior visit.
The building was officially recognized as a Heritage House only in 2009, more than a century after it was first built. Before that, it was largely unknown outside of Carcar itself, and it took local history enthusiasts to bring wider attention to its architectural value.
