Akbari Sarai

Akbari Sarai is a caravanserai built in the Mughal style with numerous rooms arranged around a central courtyard, featuring red sandstone walls adorned with detailed geometric patterns. The structure was designed to house traveling merchants and their entourages during long journeys across the empire.

Construction began in the 16th century and the complex expanded during the reign of Shah Jahan in the 1600s. This growth demonstrates how the Mughal Empire invested in trade infrastructure across generations.

This served as a stopping point for merchants and travelers crossing the Mughal realm, and you can still see how the rooms open onto a central courtyard designed to accommodate both people and animals. The layout reflects how caravans were organized and managed during that era.

The location is accessible by public transport with several stations nearby, making it convenient to reach. Wear comfortable shoes since the grounds are spacious and require walking to explore the different sections.

During the 19th century, the complex was repurposed as a military cantonment rather than remaining solely a trade hub. This transformation reveals how historical structures adapted to serve new functions beyond their original design.
