Church of Nossa Senhora da Assunção

The Church of Nossa Senhora da Assunção is a Catholic place of worship on Santa Maria Island with pointed arched doorways on its sides. Inside stands the Chapel of Santa Catarina, which features a ribbed vaulted ceiling and houses carved woodwork and religious artworks from earlier centuries.

Construction began between the 15th and 16th centuries, making it one of the earliest religious structures in the Azores. The building has undergone multiple restorations across the centuries that have kept its structure intact.

The interior holds baroque carved altars and early Flemish statues that reflect how European artistic traditions reached this island through maritime trade routes. These pieces show the religious art styles that shaped worship spaces across far-flung communities.
