Casa-Museu Marta Ortigão Sampaio, Art museum and historical garden in Cedofeita, Portugal.
Casa-Museu Marta Ortigão Sampaio is an art museum and historical garden in Cedofeita, located in a modernist building designed by José Carlos Loureiro in 1958. The interior spaces hold a collection of paintings, decorative objects, and personal items that belonged to the former owner.
The building was constructed in 1958 as a modernist project and opened to the public in 1996 following a donation to Porto City Council in 1978. This transformation into a museum preserved the legacy of an important art collector for future generations.
The exhibition features works by Portuguese naturalist painters including Silva Porto, Carlos Reis, and Malhoa, alongside a collection of around 300 jewelry pieces from different periods. The display reflects the taste of a cultivated collector who was passionate about Portuguese art and decorative crafts.
The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday and provides access to both indoor and outdoor spaces, allowing visitors to explore the art collection and the garden. Comfortable shoes are recommended since you will walk between the building and various garden areas.
The garden incorporates carved stones from the former Convent of S. Bento de Avé-Maria, which were integrated into the landscape design. A small lake surrounded by magnolias and an Atlas Cedar creates a tranquil spot that echoes the site's past.
