Covão dos Conchos, Artificial lake in Serra da Estrela Natural Park, Portugal
Covão dos Conchos is an artificial lake in Serra da Estrela built with a distinctive spillway of granite and concrete featuring a circular opening roughly 48 meters around and 4.6 meters tall. A tunnel system connects the lake to hydroelectric facilities downstream, allowing water to be directed for power generation.
The lake was built in 1955 as part of a water diversion system directing flow from Ribeira das Naves to downstream reservoirs for hydroelectric use. This project was one of several infrastructure developments that shaped how the mountain region would generate electricity during the mid-20th century.
Locals have long known this place as a hidden stop on mountain trails where hikers gather to rest and take in the surrounding peaks. The spot has become a small refuge for those seeking quiet moments away from busier areas of the park.
Reaching the lake requires several hours of mountain hiking through the park with sturdy footwear and proper gear essential for the terrain. Plan to go on a cloudier day if possible to avoid sun exposure, and bring plenty of water since shaded rest spots are few along the trail.
The circular spillway fills dramatically during spring snowmelt, creating the sensation of water spiraling into an underground vortex. Visitors often hear a rushing sound echoing from the opening when substantial water volume flows through the tunnel below.
