Serra da Estrela Natural Park, Nature park in central Portugal
Serra da Estrela Natural Park spreads across central Portugal and displays granite peaks, glacial valleys, and numerous clear lakes at different elevations. The landscape offers hiking trails for various levels, winter sports options, and a range of accommodations for visitors.
This area became a protected landscape in 1976 as Portugal's first such park, marking an important moment for conservation in the country. Roman roads and traditional irrigation systems from earlier periods can still be found scattered throughout the park today.
Shepherds in this region have managed flocks for generations and breed dogs adapted to the mountain terrain. Their knowledge of the slopes and the production of local cheese remains connected to the seasonal patterns of life here.
The park is open year-round, with warmer months being best for hiking while winter allows snow activities around the highest point. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and check weather conditions, as conditions at higher elevations can change quickly.
The landscape holds several dozen natural lakes formed by glacial activity spread across different elevations. These lakes feed three major rivers that supply water to a large portion of the country.
