Sebeș, city in Alba County, Romania

Sebeș is a city in central Transylvania situated in a valley between the Mureș and Sebeș rivers. It sits at a crossroads of major highways connecting different parts of Romania to important regional centers. The town mixes old Saxon churches and medieval walls with modern shops, factories, and residential areas that have grown in recent decades.

Sebeș was established in the 12th century by German settlers from the Rhine and Moselle regions who built it as a fortified trading post. By the 14th century it had grown into one of Transylvania's key commercial cities and was the first in the region to construct protective walls around it. The settlement hosted meetings of the Transylvanian Diet, and its fortifications were reinforced following Mongol invasions and later Ottoman occupation.

The name Sebeș comes from the Sebeș River that flows through the area. Early Saxon settlers called it Malebach and Millenbach, names reflecting the water and rocky landscape they found. Today you can still walk past churches and old houses that show how these communities shaped the place over centuries.

The town center is small enough to explore on foot, making it easy to see the old churches, walls, and traditional buildings without needing transportation. Late spring through early fall offers the most pleasant weather for walking around, though winter brings snow that may affect road conditions. Facilities like shops and restaurants are concentrated in the central areas, making them convenient to access.

The Zăpolya House once served as the meeting place for the Transylvanian Diet and is now a museum where visitors can see how governmental decisions were made in this location. This building shows that despite its modest size today, the town was important enough to host regional political gatherings that shaped the area's future. Walking through it gives a sense of the responsibility and power this place once held.
