Kondinsky District, Municipal district in Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, Russia
Kondinsky District is a municipal district located across the West Siberian Plain in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug. The territory consists of peat bogs, marshes, dense forests, and numerous rivers and lakes that shape the landscape.
The district was established in 1924 as an administrative region to support local Khanty and Mansi populations in Western Siberia. Following the discovery of large oil deposits in the mid-twentieth century, the region transformed from a traditional economy into an industrial one.
The Khanty and Mansi indigenous communities continue to live across the settlements, where fishing and hunting remain important parts of daily life. You can see evidence of these traditions in how local communities interact with the rivers and forests.
The town of Mezhdurechensky serves as the administrative hub where main services and facilities are concentrated. The district is sparsely populated with settlements spread across the vast territory, so expect considerable distances between communities.
The region experienced rapid population growth due to oil industry workers migrating from other parts of Russia, not just economic changes. This mixture of newcomers and long-time residents shapes the character of settlements today.
