Metallostroy, municipal district in Saint-Petersburg, Russia
Metallostroy is an urban district in southern Saint Petersburg that developed from the early 1930s as a workers' settlement around metal factories. The area contains residential blocks, over 20 factories including an electrical transformer plant, schools, a 1951 house of culture, and parks with war memorials.
The district was founded in 1931 and unofficially called Sotsgorodok (workers' town) before being officially named Metallostroy in 1964. Following wartime destruction, it rapidly rebuilt during the postwar years and became a key industrial center for the city.
The name Metallostroy combines 'metal' and 'construction,' reflecting its origins as a workers' settlement built around factories. Central Centralnaya Street, lined with linden trees, serves as the social heart where shops, schools, and the house of culture draw residents together.
Metallostroy is easily accessed by bus and its own train station, which connects to the wider Saint Petersburg network. Most services cluster along Centralnaya Street, and visitors can explore the district on foot or by bicycle.
The district has served as a filming location for several Soviet and Russian films and television series, with its everyday buildings and streets providing an authentic workers' settlement backdrop. Small micro-districts like 'China Wall' and 'Three Pencils' have developed their own local character and nicknames among residents.
