Totskoye, human settlement in Totsky District, Orenburg Oblast, Russia
Totskoye is a village in the Orenburg region of Russia and serves as the administrative center of Totsky District. The settlement sits on flat land surrounded by open fields, with simple houses and farms scattered throughout its quiet streets.
The village was founded in 1736 and developed as an agricultural center in the region. During the 20th century, Totskoye played a significant role in military activities, including a prisoner of war camp during World War I and later as a site for Soviet nuclear weapons testing in 1954.
The village is best reached by car or local transport via roads from larger towns in the region. Visitors should bring basic supplies as there are limited shops and restaurants, and overnight stays may mean staying with a local host family or small guesthouse.
A survivor of the World War I prisoner camp was writer Jaroslav Hašek, whose experience remains part of the region's recorded history. The area was also the site of Soviet nuclear testing, which left invisible marks on the landscape that visitors can learn about today.
