Azimut Hotel, hotel in Saint Petersburg
The Azimut Hotel is a tall building on the Fontanka River embankment in the center of Saint Petersburg. The hotel has over nine hundred rooms and suites, along with several conference halls and restaurants offering European cuisine.
The building was constructed in the late 1960s under the name Sovietskaya Hotel, when it served as one of the main reception points for foreign travelers arriving in the USSR. In 2005 the Russian Azimut chain took over the property and renovated it.
The hotel sits in the Admiralty district, where old bridges and canal embankments are part of everyday street life. Visitors walking through the neighborhood naturally pass Orthodox churches, covered markets, and small courtyards tucked behind ornate facades.
Two metro stations are within walking distance, and several tram and bus stops are nearby, making it straightforward to move around the city from here. The Mariinsky Theatre and other major landmarks can be reached on foot in a short time.
The upper floors look directly over the Fontanka River, and on clear days the view stretches across a wide sweep of the city's rooftops. The river is close enough that guests on those floors can sometimes hear boats passing below.
