Quarters of the Lifeguard Izmaylovsky Regiment

Quarters of the Lifeguard Izmaylovsky Regiment, building in Russia

The Quarters of the Lifeguard Izmaylovsky Regiment is a classical complex originally built to house soldiers of the unit. The structures feature simple, functional facades with regularly spaced windows and sturdy columns, reflecting the formal architectural style of its era.

The regimental complex was built in the 18th century by architects Volkoff and Carbonier to serve as barracks. The Izmaylovsky Regiment, as an elite guard unit, played an important role in Russian military history, particularly during wars and in defending the nation.

The quarters take their name from the Izmaylovo area, once a favored summer residence of the Empress. Soldiers stationed here maintained their traditions through daily drills and ceremonies in the quiet courtyards of the complex.

The complex is located along Izmailovsky Avenue and is easily walkable, with the regular arrangement of buildings making them simple to recognize. Visitors can explore the site and view the better-preserved barracks with their fencing to understand the military way of life.

The regiment name comes from the Izmaylovo area, which was closely tied to the Imperial family, creating a link between military service and royal authority. Some parts of the original structure still show visible repairs from the early 20th century, revealing how the building was cared for over time.
