Granovitaya Tower, 16th-century defensive tower in Kolomna, Russia
Granovitaya Tower is a 16th-century defensive structure within the Kolomna Kremlin featuring octagonal outer walls that surround a square inner chamber. The building rises approximately 22 meters and stands as a notable part of the fortress complex.
Built in 1525 under the direction of Italian architect Aleviz Novyi, the tower formed part of the fortress's defense system against raids from the south. Its construction represented a key phase in strengthening the city's protection.
The tower houses the Svyatogor Centre of Russian Military Culture, where visitors can see ancient Russian weapons and military artifacts on display. The collection tells stories about the region's military past through objects that visitors can examine up close.
The tower is located along Ulitsa Oktyabrskoy Revolyutsii and can be visited as part of a walking tour through the Kolomna Kremlin complex. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended since the fortress grounds have uneven terrain.
Between this tower and the Kolomenskaya Tower stretches the longest surviving section of the original Kremlin walls from the 1520s. This extended stretch of walls reveals the original construction techniques and quality of the fortress building.
