Cathedral of the Dormition of the Theotokos, Kolomna, Orthodox cathedral in Kolomna, Russia
The Cathedral of the Dormition of the Theotokos is an Orthodox church in Kolomna, Russia, built from light stone and crowned with three domes, standing at the center of Cathedral Square inside the Kolomna Kremlin. It is one of the oldest and largest religious buildings in the city, and its position within the fortress walls makes it the focal point of the historic core.
The cathedral was founded in the late 14th century, shortly after a Russian victory over Mongol forces at the Battle of Kulikovo. The building was rebuilt and modified over the following centuries, taking its current form largely in the 17th century.
The name of the cathedral refers to the Dormition of the Mother of God, one of the most important feasts in the Orthodox calendar. Inside, visitors can see icons surrounded by candles lit by worshippers who come to pray throughout the day.
The cathedral sits within the Kolomna Kremlin, which is easy to reach on foot from the town center. Visitors attending outside of service times will have more space to look around, while those who arrive during a service should dress modestly and move quietly.
The wall paintings inside the cathedral are attributed to Theophanes the Greek, a Byzantine master who worked in Russia in the 14th century. This makes them some of the few surviving works by this artist found outside of his better-known paintings in Moscow and Novgorod.
