Lermontov Grotto

Lermontov Grotto is a natural cave carved into the slope of Mount Mashuk, with interior stonework designed in the early 1800s. The stone walls and archways create a cool sheltered space that opens to views across Pyatigorsk and the surrounding landscape.

Originally called Calypso Grotto, the site was renamed to honor poet Mikhail Lermontov after his death in 1841. The cave became a developed attraction within the park during the 19th century as a destination for visitors to the mountain slopes.

The grotto holds deep meaning for Russian literature enthusiasts, as it marks where the famous poet spent crucial time during his stay. The site reflects how writers and artists of the 19th century sought out natural places in the Caucasus to find inspiration.

The grotto sits within Emanuel Park and is accessible via walking trails from different parts of the city. You can visit free of charge and at your own pace throughout the year without restrictions.

The grotto originally served as a natural rest stop for visitors climbing the mountain, offering shelter and refreshment on the slope. Today you can experience the same cool refuge and views that attracted travelers to this spot in earlier times.
