Kamenny Island Palace, Neoclassical palace on Kamenny Island, Saint Petersburg, Russia.
Kamenny Island Palace is a neoclassical building on an island in Saint Petersburg, distinguished by its balanced, symmetrical design and the six grand columns that mark its main entrance. The structure overlooks the Malaya Nevka River and displays the clean proportions typical of the neoclassical style.
Empress Catherine II commissioned this palace in 1776 as a symbol of enlightened rule and imperial wealth. Architect Yury Felten began the project, but Italian architect Giacomo Quarenghi completed the building in 1782, giving it its final form.
The palace now houses the Academy of Talents, where young musicians, dancers, and artists study and perform regularly throughout the year. Walking around the building, you may encounter rehearsals and public performances that bring the space to life.
The palace sits on an island reachable by foot from the Chernaya Rechka metro station via bridges and pathways. Access for visitors is primarily during academy events and public performances rather than regular daily tours.
The building features an unusual П-shaped layout with two extended wings that create an enclosed courtyard at its center. This design gives the palace hidden garden spaces and interior areas that remain largely unseen from the river.
