Königliches Waisenhaus

The Königliches Waisenhaus is a building complex in Kaliningrad comprising multiple structures with architectural features from the 18th century. The grounds display baroque elements and varied facades that were partially reconstructed through different periods.

The facility was founded in 1701 as an orphanage to care for children without parental support during Prussia's development period. After World War II, the complex came under Soviet administration and was repurposed for various public functions.

The complex displays German architectural traditions that were preserved after Soviet takeover and continue to shape the local townscape. Buildings serve as a visible link between the region's German past and its Russian present, noticed by anyone walking through the area.

The grounds are easily reachable by public transportation in central Kaliningrad and sit within a residential area with other historic buildings nearby. It is advisable to check in advance which areas are open to the public, as parts of the complex still serve various institutions.
