Fontanka river embankment, Riverfront and cultural heritage site along Fontanka River in Saint Petersburg, Russia

The Fontanka River embankment is a waterfront pathway that winds through Saint Petersburg, lined with stone walls on both sides. The banks are reinforced with granite and decorated with ornate iron railings that frame views of the river and surrounding architecture.

In the 18th century, the Fontanka marked the southern edge of Saint Petersburg before the city grew outward. The granite reinforcement of the banks was completed between 1780 and 1789, transforming the river into a key part of the city's framework.

The name Fontanka comes from the Italian word 'fontana' meaning fountain, reflecting the Baroque grandeur that shaped this area. Walking along the embankment today, you can see how elegant palaces and the river's presence define the character of this neighborhood.

The embankment is easy to reach on foot or by bike and has bridges at regular intervals connecting both sides. The best way to experience it is to walk slowly, taking time to notice the buildings and water views that appear along the way.

Along the embankment are 26 stone staircases that originally served as landing points for boats and goods, built with granite blocks on wooden pilings. These historic passages reveal how central the river once was to daily commerce and movement.
