Pyramid Fountain, Baroque fountain in Peterhof, Russia
The Pyramid Fountain is a Baroque fountain in the Lower Park of Peterhof with a four-sided stepped structure from which water erupts in cascading patterns. The system uses an intricate network of pipes to shoot approximately 500 water jets into the air at the same time.
The fountain was built between 1721 and 1724 following architect Nicola Michetti's designs under the rule of Peter the Great. Its construction was part of a larger redesign of the park as a symbol of imperial power.
The fountain's pyramidal structure represents a monument to Russian military triumphs, taking inspiration from traditional victory obelisks placed at battle sites.
The fountain operates through an intricate gravity-fed system that distributes water from a nearby reservoir without pumps. Visitors should arrive early in the morning or during less crowded times to experience the water displays comfortably.
Seven separate chambers in an iron box beneath the fountain control individual water jets and allow operators to adjust the height of each stream. This once enabled gardeners to stage surprise water sprays when guests walked by.
