Chivyrkuyskiy Zaliv, Protected bay in Lake Baikal, Russia.
Chivyrkuyskiy Zaliv is a protected bay on the northeastern shore of Lake Baikal, bordered by the Svyatoi Nos peninsula and the Barguzinsky mountain range. The water body contains several islands and features diverse coastal habitats along its shoreline.
The bay was shaped by geological processes that formed Lake Baikal and was used for generations by local communities dependent on fishing and natural resources. Its protected status was later established to preserve the ecological balance of the region.
Nearby settlements such as Kurbulik, Katun, and Monakhovo show traditional fishing methods passed down through generations. Life in these villages reflects a deep connection between residents and the natural resources surrounding them.
To visit the bay, you need a permit for Zabaikalsky National Park and can reach the area by bus from nearby Ulan-Ude. The warmer months offer better access and road conditions for getting there.
Seven protected islands within the bay serve as nesting grounds for waterfowl including Baikal teals, various duck species, and goldeneyes. These islands are retreats for rare bird species and play an important role in the lake's ecosystem.
