Eketorp Fort, Ring fort and museum in Mörbylånga Municipality, Sweden
Eketorp Fort is a circular fortification on Öland island with thick stone walls and wooden structures forming a large ring. Inside, small chambers and spaces fit together to create an ancient defensive system.
The fort arose during the Iron Age roughly 1700 years ago and was later used as a military post between the 12th and 13th centuries. These two phases show how the site remained important across the centuries.
The site reveals how people lived and worked here through tools, jewelry, and animal remains uncovered during excavations. These discoveries tell stories of craftsmanship, trade, and family life from that era.
The site is best visited during daylight so you can see the structure and excavation finds from both outside and inside clearly. Summer months bring regular activities like crafts demonstrations and traditional techniques that show how people lived in the past.
The fort is the only completely excavated fortification of its kind on Öland, even though the island holds many similar ruins. This distinction makes it a rare window into Iron Age life in this region.
