Kyrkbron, Concrete bridge in Umeå, Sweden
Kyrkbron is a concrete bridge that connects the island of Ön to the mainland across the Ume River, spanning approximately 391 meters in total length. The structure features two parallel concrete girders and a main span of about 47 meters.
Planning for the bridge began in the early 1970s, and construction started in 1973 to improve the growing connection between the city center and the island. The opening took place in 1975 and marked an important milestone for urban development.
The bridge links the island of Ön to the mainland and became a key structure for the city when it opened. It created new routes for residents and vehicles to move between different parts of Umeå.
The bridge is open to traffic daily and accommodates both vehicles and bicycles with separate lanes for each. The clearance underneath allows for river traffic and the structure is accessible to all types of transport.
During construction, workers uncovered around 40 burial sites and cannonballs dating back about 200 years, suggesting a forgotten conflict. These archaeological discoveries required careful study and caused delays before work could continue.
