Bildmuseet, Contemporary art museum on Arts Campus, Umeå, Sweden
Bildmuseet is a seven-story building with a larch wood exterior and large windows that overlook the Ume River and the northern Swedish landscape. The structure dominates the campus with its wooden facade and expansive views of the surroundings.
Bildmuseet was founded in 1981 by Umeå University and moved to its current site in 2012 in a building designed by architect Henning Larsen. The relocation marked a new chapter for the institution, allowing it to expand its activities with modern facilities.
The museum showcases work by artists from around the world and hosts regular talks, film screenings, and concerts throughout the year. Visitors experience art alongside public events that bring the exhibitions to life.
Entry to all exhibitions, guided tours, and activities is free of charge, and the museum shop sells art books and exhibition catalogs. The building is easy to find and accessible, especially for those walking along the riverbanks.
The wooden panels on the exterior gradually shift from their original warm larch tone to natural grey over time due to weather exposure. This slow transformation gives the building a living quality that changes with the seasons and years.
