Umeå, University city on Ume River, northern Sweden.

Umeå is a university city on the Ume River in northern Sweden, where academic institutions shape the urban landscape and cultural centers contribute to public life. The core sits on both riverbanks, combining modern architecture with wide avenues laid out after a major fire.

King Gustav II Adolf founded the settlement in 1622 to strengthen Swedish influence in the region. After the 1888 fire, the city was rebuilt with wide streets and rows of birch trees planted as natural firebreaks.

The Västerbottens Museum preserves regional heritage through exhibits of cultural artifacts, including the world's oldest skis dating from 3400 BC.

The airport connects the city with Stockholm and other destinations, while the central bus station at Vasaplan offers regional services. Most routes in the city center are manageable on foot or by bike, as distances remain short.

The city maintains more than 3000 birch trees along its streets, planted after the fire and giving it the nickname City of Birches. The Västerbottens Museum displays the oldest skis in the world, dating from around 3400 BC.
