Betnava Mansion

Betnava Mansion is a baroque estate with an ornate facade and expansive gardens located near Maribor. The main building displays classical proportions and decorative stonework typical of 18th-century nobility residences, arranged around structured grounds that reflect its former importance.

The complex started as a fortified structure in the 14th century and later became a Renaissance water castle before a fire around 1685 led to its baroque reconstruction. This shift reflects how major events reshaped the building's form and function through different periods.

The name reflects its past as a residence for nobility, and the building still shows signs of the various families who shaped its character over centuries. Walking through the grounds, you notice how the layout serves both practical needs and displays of status that were important to its former inhabitants.

The mansion is located in the Razvanje district and is best reached by car since it sits outside the main city area. Check ahead about visiting access since the property now serves as a residence for the Diocese of Maribor and may not always be open to the public.

During World War II, German forces took control of the estate, after which it remained under state ownership for decades into the late 20th century. This period shaped how many national monuments were treated and restored in the country's postwar period.
