Large Hincovo Lake, Alpine lake in High Tatras, Slovakia
Large Hincovo Lake is an alpine lake in the High Tatras located at about 1,946 meters (6,400 feet) elevation. The water is exceptionally clear and the lake sits surrounded by steep rocky peaks and mountain meadows.
The lake formed during the Ice Age when glaciers carved out the mountain terrain and created a basin held in place by glacial deposits. This ancient glacial shaping determined the lake's current form and location high in the mountains.
The name comes from a shepherd or local landowner believed to have discovered this high-altitude lake centuries ago. This connection to the mountains' human history remains visible in how people refer to the surrounding peaks and valleys today.
The lake is reached by a marked mountain trail that requires stamina and proper hiking boots. The best time to visit is from June to September when snow has melted and conditions are most stable.
The water remains frozen for about nine months of the year, making the lake nearly invisible under thick ice during winter. This extended frozen period transforms the place into a completely different environment from one season to the next.
